When Life’s not Fair
Everyone’s life is a series of ups and downs, of valleys and mountain tops. We often think that if we do all the right things that all will go well for us, but the truth is that bad things do happen to good people. The world doesn’t owe us a living and even when we feel that we deserve a good life, we are sometimes thrown a curve ball.
The reality is that life is not fair, and it is not always consistent. Life’s lessons are often hard because they are there to teach us, and to give us a means to understand the difference between happiness and sadness. Without the two extremes, we wouldn’t have any conception of what is good and what is bad. Imagine if your life was always happy and a bed or roses, with no contrast. Firstly, you wouldn’t be able to understand and experience your full range of emotions, and secondly, life would become totally bland and uninteresting. You need the lows to appreciate the highs.
When you came into this world it was a struggle. You had to be forced down your mothers’ birth canal and be expelled out into the world. Your first emotion was pain and that is one of the reasons babies cry at birth, besides, of cause taking their first breath. As you grew you learnt to cry when hungry or needing changing. Right from the start life is teaching you good and bad experiences.
Nobody owes you a living, everyone is struggling themselves, with the same problems you have. The difference between those who survive and prosper, and those who don’t, is very often just the way they handle bad situations when they arise. If you are real with yourself and accept that problems will come your way, you are then prepared and ready for them, and therefore able to deal with them more effectively. If you don’t accept that life will be unfair to you, then you will moan and groan your way through life, blaming others for your misfortune. The result of this is that you will make no attempt to solve each problem, feeling that it is out of your control, and you will be unable to move on and achieve success.
We need a certain amount of hardship to develop our characters and to make us become more aware of the suffering in the world, so that when other people suffer, we can comfort and encourage them. With every hardship we grow in our capacity to turn challenges into opportunities.
The author Tim Hansel said “Pain is inevitable but misery is optional”. Even the most successful people will encounter painful periods in their life, but they learn to overcome them or accept them, working around them instead of fighting them head on. When you accept the reality that you life isn’t fair, then you are more ready to deal with the ups and downs, learn from them, and come through on the other side a better person.
When bad things happen we need to look for the silver lining and for constructive ways to deal with each situation. Some things can’t be fixed, and in those cases you must just learn to manage the problem, find alternative solutions, and make the best of challenges as they occur.
Even though in life you may face hardships, on balance, most of the time you can be happy, as long as you appreciate the good times, store up the reserves to cope with the bad times, knowing that the good times will come around again. In the bible it tells us “this too shall pass”, as eventually most problems do get sorted. We need to just keep hope as we pass through the seemingly unfair storms of life.
A Disaster or a Blessing in Disguise
Do you know if something is bad or good? What may seem a disaster could turn out to be the best thing that we could have happen. This is illustrated in the following poem by Jonathan Robinson:
The Old Man
Once long ago, their lived an old man.
He had no money. He had no plan.
All that he had was a horse oh so grand
and he and horse all that lived off the land.
The King offered riches for this horse oh so fine,
“I’ll give you my money if you’ll make your horse mine.”
But the old man said, “My horse will not be sold,
He lives with me. He lives free and bold.”
Then one day the horse was plain gone.
“The horse has been stolen, “ the townsfolk cried on.
The old man said, “Friends, don’t look so sad,
Though the horse be gone that may not be so bad”
“You foolish old man, look what you’ve done.
You had a fine horse and now you have none.
A curse it is and a curse it will be,
You shouldn’t have let your horse wander free!”
The horse soon returned with others by its side.
There were twelve now of beauty and pride.
The townsfolk said, “Old man, you were right.
You are blessed to have horses of unearthly delight!”
“I have now 12 horses, yes that is true
But that does not mean I am blessed with them too.
It is too soon to judge, who knows what will be?
Try not to make stories from the little you see.”
As it came to pass, the old man’s only son
Tried riding a horse, just for fun.
Yet he broke both his legs while playing this game
And the townsfolk cried, “Oh what a shame!”
The old man said, “Friends don’t speak so soon.
You hear just one note yet you sing an entire tune.
Who’s to say what the future may hold?
My son’s legs are broken but the future lies untold.”
Soon there was war, and the young men of town
Were all sent to fight and were shot down.
But the old man’s son was saved from this plight.
He had broken his legs, he was forced not to fight.
And the townsfolk cried out, “Again you were right!”
But the old man replied, “Have you not sight?
Only God knows what is and will be.
To live and let live is to live and live free.”
As you can see, when you think what has happened is a disaster, it may not be, only time will tell. The lesson here is not to jump to conclusions but wait and see what happens. What looks like the worst thing that could happen to you, may turn out to be the best.
How Do You See Yourself?
“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
“Your imagination is extremely powerful. God created you as a visual being. Choosing the right images in your mind's eye is important because your life will move in the direction of your thoughts. The way you see yourself in your mind's eye, over time, will drop down into your heart and become your reality. If you'll create a picture in your imagination of something you want, or a dream coming to pass and keep it in front of you, then you will move in that direction. I encourage you to get up every morning and picture yourself succeeding! Picture yourself healthy and whole! Picture yourself and your family not only being blessed, but being a bigger blessing to others. If you'll keep the right images in front of you, and always submit yourself to the Lord through prayer and thanksgiving, you’ll move forward into the life of victory God has promised you.”
Joel Osteen (Pastor)
When the law of attraction doesn’t seem to be working
The law of attraction states that whatever we focus on the most and with emotion is drawn into our lives. If you feel that you have tried to do this and it just doesn’t seem to be working, maybe these could be the reasons why:
Firstly are you really focusing on what you want several times a day? You need to work at your focus until it is part of who you are. That is until you know that what you are trying to manifest is going to arrive, no matter what. You can see it, feel it and smell it.
Do you keep changing your mind’s focus? Many people jump around with their thoughts, and they find it difficult to keep concentrating on one major goal. Are your thoughts, “I would like this, and that, and that”? Unless you pick one major goal you aren’t sending a clear message.
Another secret to drawing your desire to you is to focus on the stages needed to achieve it. As each stage manifests, then focus on the next stage, until the whole is complete. For example, you may want to start a new career, so you focus on getting the right qualifications, then maybe finding the right employer for you, etc.
When you focus on realizing one main dream with passion every day, it will arrive. This is a very powerful tool to use, so use it wisely. Be careful what you wish for!
A Yeast Free Diet
This was discussed in the previous newsletter. I hope some of you have tried it with good results.
Here is a helpful comment from Mike who lives in New Zealand:
Hi Chris
Yep Bread & Whole milk is a big NO NO for me!
I was taking whey protein powder a little while ago with milk & found I was putting on fat easy & feeling bloated.
I now mix it with water & feel heaps better.
As for bread I noticed that dropping 90% of it out of my diet reduced body fat dramatically. I now eat mainly rice for my carb intake.
Reducing or eliminating sugar was the biggest winner for me though!!
Bread, biscuits, cakes & beer have sugar too.
Regards
Mike
