Materialism v Experiences
What’s more important to you, a new expensive gadget or an interesting holiday somewhere exotic? Are you materialistic or do you prefer to fill your life with interesting experiences?
Did you know that people who constantly buy the latest new ‘thing’ are often less happy and satisfied with their life, and more likely to suffer from depression?
Experiments have shown that after a few weeks the people who had purchased an experience such as a trip or visit to a concert where still able to enjoy their memories and felt more satisfied with the experience, than people who had purchased a physical item.
As time passes experiences often improve as you can remember times like your first date or the birth of a child. On the other hand that great outfit you picked up in a sale no longer has any place in your memory. It is still just an object that gave only momentary pleasure.
You can never think of material things such as a car as anything but a car, even if it is the latest and greatest. It only gives you pleasure for a limited time, whereas memories of experiences become representative of a wonderful time in your life, and your mind retains them as happy reminiscences.
When you talk to others about your experiences it is more enjoyable for them and more palatable to them than if you are bragging about your material purchases. If you enjoy plenty of experiences it makes you a more interesting and likable person, and people enjoy living them through you.
With material possessions we all tend to get on the comparison band wagon – looking at which new car your neighbour has, how big their boat is compared to yours, etc. This generally causes unhappiness and discontent all round, because there is always someone who has a nicer car or makes more money than you do. If you are the one who has the greater possessions the pleasure of that is still fleeting compared with having wonderful life experiences that will give you lasting pleasure.
Experiences tend to be more unique than material possessions. The latest gadget is one of millions being sold throughout the world. Experiencing an enjoyable day out with your family, watching your children enjoy themselves, and playing with them, is a unique experience to you, and having shared it with your dear ones makes it even more so.
Very often, the person who values possessions above relationships, is ultimately a very unhappy and lonely person.
The Darkest Hour is just before Dawn
You may remember these words from a popular song in the eighties. How many of you have woken up in the early hours and let your fears wash over you? It seems to be the time that we are most vulnerable to negative thinking. It is the time when the solution that you thought would work, throws you a curve ball. Everything seems impossible to deal with and overcome.
You feel at your lowest and you lie there wishing you could fall back to sleep, so you didn’t have to think about your problems.
Here are some strategies that you can use to help you overcome these unwelcome thoughts.
- Firstly really feel your fear. As Dr Phil says “you can’t change what you won’t acknowledge”. Get into it and think about the worst outcome you can possibly imagine. Then tell yourself that you can survive the worst that can happen. You have survived in the past and you can survive in the future. Your spirit is much hardier than you believe. Then you can accept that this is normal to feel this way in these circumstances. Anyone would feel this way if they were in the same situation. It is normal to feel fear.
- Go now into your mental movie studio. Get comfortable and generate a film onto the screen before you. Imagine yourself as extremely capable and competent. Let the scene of the imagined catastrophe unfold before you. But in this movie you can accomplish the outcome that you want. You are skilled, clever and gifted. You can deal with this situation in a way that will have a happy outcome for you.
- Affirm to yourself that you have handled problems in the past and you can handle this one easily and well.
- If you are still having problems removing your fear, mentally go back into your movie studio and replay the situation. This time I want you to turn everything you see as ridiculous and funny. Use your imagination to create a comedy. Turn the plot into a funny farce and laugh at it. The situation becomes amusing, the people become hilarious, and you laugh your fear away.
I hope this helps the next time you have the four o’clock horrors!
Do Couples tend to Look Alike?
Studies have shown that after being with another person for twenty five years or more that they do actually have similar facial features. This is not caused just by the aging process but other factors have been found that may be the cause.
The main reason could be that they share the same diet. Some foods such as a high fat diet would produce a chubbier look to both faces.
The second reason is that they both live in the same place. For example if they lived in a hot climate they would both develop similar colouring and wrinkles.
They may choose their mate with a similar personality. Therefore a jolly couple would both develop crinkles around the eyes. A depressing couple would both look sad.
Couples tend to empathize with each others’ feelings. This could cause their expressions to be more of a match. Again the habitual facial expressions for both people would produce similar wrinkles and furrows on their faces.
Perhaps you could look at your partner’s parents and see what life has wrought on their faces. The future could be similar for their offspring, your partner. That might be a scary thought, or maybe a pleasant one if you are lucky!
TOP 8 MORONS OF 2007
I couldn’t resist passing this list on. Thanks Bob for bringing them to my attention. Laughter is good for the soul.
1. WILL THE REAL DUMMY PLEASE STAND UP? AT&T fired President John Walter after
nine months, saying he lacked intellectual leadership. He received a $26 million
severance package. Perhaps it's not Walter who's lacking intelligence.
2. WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS: Police in Oakland, CA spent two hours
attempting to subdue a gunman who had barricaded himself inside his home. After
firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the man was standing
beside them in the police line, shouting, 'Please come out and give your-self
up.'
3. WHAT WAS PLAN B??? An Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a
motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines,
wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.
4. THE GETAWAY! A man walked into a Topeka , Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all
the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up
the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police
showed up and grabbed him!
5. DID I SAY THAT??? Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect
who just couldn't control himself during a lineup. When detectives asked each
man in the lineup to repeat the words: 'Give me all your money or I'll shoot',
the man shouted, 'that's not what I said!'
6. ARE WE COMMUNICATING??? A man spoke frantically into the phone: 'My wife is
pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart'.
'Is this her first child?' the doctor asked. 'No!' the man shouted, 'This is her
husband!'
7. NOT THE SHARPEST TOOL IN THE SHED! In Modesto , CA , Steven Richard King was
arrested for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King
used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep
his hand in his pocket. (hellooooooo)!
8. THE GRAND FINALE!!! Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high
desert, an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having
a problem. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22
foot boat, going. It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how
much power they applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, they
pulled into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them
what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working
condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the
propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in
the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so
hard. NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE. Under the boat, still strapped securely in
place, was the trailer!
